Fall Yard Decoration Ideas

Using Pumpkins

• Pumpkins complete any fall yard display and come in a variety of colors and sizes. Put similar-sized ones in a ring around your mailbox. Starting at the street, arrange orange pumpkins along your walkway by size, with the largest ones resting on your front steps. At night, pair them with candles to light the way to your door. Pile small white and pale green pumpkins in rustic containers like galvanized pails or large crocks. Tuck in fall grasses as an accent, and wrap the containers in raffia tied in a bow. Place them on either side of your front door for an unusual fall display. Pumpkin pyramids stacked under trees draw the eye to the colorful leaves above. Sit the roundest orange pumpkins you can find in rocking chairs on your front porch, or group them casually on the lawn.

Arranging Mums

• You can fill your window boxes with mums, the quintessential fall flowers. Choose colors that contrast with your house. Bight yellow mums go well with a dark green exterior, while deep purple flowers work with light grey siding. Plant mums of various colors in your flower beds for a fall accent under the shrubs. Place mums in hanging pots of various sizes, and suspend them from low tree branches. Use one large plant or three smaller ones as a centerpiece on an outdoor table. Arrange the flowers on your steps with the smallest pot on the bottom step, medium pots in the middle and the largest pot on the top step.

Scarecrow Display

• Put scarecrows to work in your fall yard display. Place one in a lawn chair in the front yard. Prop his feet on a hay bale surrounded by pumpkins and mums. Buy or build wooden crows on sticks. Poke one into the scarecrow’s shoulder to imitate a live bird sitting there. Distribute the other crows around the hay bale and on the ground among the flowers. If you are setting up the display next to a tree, tie cornstalks around it, highlighted with small bunches of Indian corn.
