Instructions

    • 1

Shop at antique, vintage and thrift shops to purchase small glasses, vases, jars, tins and boxes that are big enough to hold votive candles. Search for and buy interesting pieces that aren't necessarily meant to be home decoration, such as tea cups, small pots and small bowls.

    • 2

Purchase the type of decorations you'd like to apply to the votive holders from a specialty craft store or store that sells craft supplies. Buy interesting things like sequins, paint, stencils, beads and buttons that coordinate with the style and colors in your house. Purchase a hot glue gun and extra glue sticks to use to attach the decorations to the votives.

    • 3

Wash the intended votives with a gentle soap (so as to not remove paint) and dry them.

    • 4

Lay out the decorations on the table. Plug in the glue gun and allow it to heat up the glue. As the glue is heating, if you desire, paint designs onto the votives using a very small and precise brush or use a stencil to guide your strokes. Let the paint dry.

    • 5

Apply the hot glue to the glass and metal pieces that you are turning into imaginative votives. Allow the glue to cool just a bit so that it doesn't melt the decorations, then apply the decorations in a creative fashion. Coordinate the votives by using similar patterns of decorations, or make each one completely unique in order to bring a eye-catching accessory to every room in your home.

    • 6

Drop a votive candle in each votive holder when the glue has cooled, the paint has dried and the decorations are securely fastened to the votive.
