How to Create Shade in a Backyard

There are several ways to create shade in your backyard so that you can enjoy being outside more than ever. For example, gazebos not only create shade, but you can also use them for entertaining or as a retreat in your yard. Made from polyethylene or weather-resistant polyester, outdoor canopies can fit in the smallest yards and come in various styles and colors. You can also find shade sails, which block harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. When you choose the trees that offer shade, such as pine trees, you create shade in your backyard for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Build a gazebo to create shade in your backyard. Gazebos generally look like small structures with screening on all sides, although styles can differ. Build an uncomplicated gazebo from a kit if you desire. Use your gazebo for entertaining, shelter around your hot tub, an outdoor dining area or a place to unwind and relax.

Install a sun sail or shade sail in your backyard. Choose a sail in the color, material and shape of your choice, then attach it to a structure, such as a tree, patio column or your home. Some sails look like triangular sailboat sails and appear to float in the air when tied down securely. Providing water resistant or waterproof shade, your shade sail can keep you comfortable during hot, sunny days.

Set up a shade canopy inexpensively in your backyard. A shade canopy looks like a room without walls. Choose an instant, preassembled canopy that needs no tools, comes in a storage bag and takes only five minutes to set up. Erect a larger canopy to place in your garden area, if desired. Use your shade canopy for outdoor dining, socializing, or for shelter by your pool.

Grow shade trees, such as evergreen, in your yard. Evergreen trees provide shade all year round. Plant quaking aspen trees inexpensively for shade--these grow quickly with almost no maintenance. Shade master trees also grow quickly, becoming full-grown in three years, and providing much shade in your backyard.
