Topiaries can be carved and trained in a variety of geometrical shapes. Common shapes are orbs, ovals, squares, hexagons and triangles. Trees can be carved to have one or multiple shapes incorporated in their design. For example, a tree with two square shapes on the bottom topped with a triangular shape on top creates a common pillar shape. Large bushes can be formed into simple, large shapes such as orbs or hexagons for easy maintenance.
Bushes can be carved into various animal silhouettes; traditional animals include the elephant and the lion. However, any animal form can be used. Animals with distinct silhouettes make for the easiest designs. Common animals include squirrels, giraffes, dragons, turtles, dogs and horses.
Topiaries can be designed to look like various inanimate objects as well. Common designs include vases, wheels, automobiles and chairs. Inanimate designs are not as commonly sculpted as animals or geometrical shapes but have been carved throughout history.
