Set up a work surface where all your supplies will be readily available. Protect the table or other surface with a drop cloth or newspapers.
Apply a ring of low-tack painter's tape inside the ceramic pot, about 2 inches from the lip. Do not paint below this line of tape.
Mix acrylic or latex paints in small bowls to create the desired colors. Do not dilute the paint with water.
Use a sponge paint brush to apply the paint to the pot. Apply two or more coats for complete coverage. Use the same color for each coat, or create a mottled texture using different colors. Allow the paint to dry before embellishing.
Add fine details, lines or writing with a lettering brush. Thin the paint with matte medium to give it more fluidity, if necessary.
Tape a stencil to the pot if creating multiples of the same design. Use a stencil brush to stipple paint onto the stencil. Keep the stencil brush fairly dry so your stenciled image will not look lumpy or smeared. Wipe off the back of the stencil with a rag after each use.
Use high-gloss, satin or matte varnish to seal and protect your paint job, depending on the degree of sheen you want. Apply a coat of varnish with a soft, flat brush once the paint is dry. Use a second coat for projects intended for outdoor use. Remove the strip of tape inside the ceramic pot.
Wash paint brushes with soap and water.
