How to Make a Fountain Using a Flower Pot

You may have contemplated adding a water fountain to your outdoor environment. The soft, bubbly sound of running water in a small fountain is so soothing when you are enjoying your garden or patio. Making a water fountain using a flower pot is easy and inexpensive. You can begin to construct it in the morning and enjoy it by the following evening. If your flower pot is large enough, you can even add aquatic plants to your fountain.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a location in your landscape for your flower pot fountain. There are a few considerations when picking the location. First and foremost is that you will need access to a power source, an electrical plug. This does not mean you must locate your fountain directly next to an outdoor electrical outlet because you can use an extension cord. But the fountain must be within range of the length of your extension cord. Also, make sure the ground where you are going to place your fountain is level.

    • 2

Cut the 1/2-inch rigid tubing or hose to a length that is 2 to 3 inches shorter than the height of your flower pot.

    • 3

Place the submersible pump in your flower pot. Thread the electrical cord of the pump through and out the drain hole of the flower pot. Leave enough cord in the pot that will allow the pump to be elevated later to 3 to 5 inches from the bottom of the pot.

    • 4

Use duct tape to securely tape the electrical cord of the pump to the outside bottom of the flower pot.

    • 5

Fill around the cord and drain hole of the flower pot with waterproof silicone sealant to completely seal the opening. Allow the sealant to thoroughly dry, at least 24 hours. After 24 hours, check for leaks by adding a quart or more of water to your flower pot. If you see any leaks at the drain hole, dry the pot and patch the leaking areas with the sealant, and, again, allow it to dry thoroughly before re-checking for leaks.

    • 6

Hold the submersible pump while you add pea gravel, river rock, or small pebble rocks in the bottom of your flower pot. The rock depth should be 3 to 5 inches deep. Set your submersible pump on top of these rocks.

    • 7

Attach the rigid tube or hose to the submersible pump. It should be 1 to 2 inches below the rim of your flower pot.

    • 8

Level your flower pot fountain using bricks. Once you have leveled the fountain, fill it with water to about 1 inch from the rim.

    • 9

Plug in the submersible pump and enjoy the soothing sounds of your flower pot fountain.
