Homemade Outdoor Decorations for Outdoor Trees for the Birds

Making bird feeders for the garden is a fun, rewarding family activity. In just a few minutes you can create a beautiful edible ornament out of simple household items that will keep both your children and the local winged wildlife entertained. Birds will appreciate the feeders year-round, especially during winter months when food is difficult to find. The pine cone bird feeder will attract small birds such as chickadees, robins, finches and jays for you to view and enjoy.

    • 1

Measure a foot of twine or ribbon and cut it from the roll with scissors.

Wrap the center of the ribbon around the third bract of the pine cone opposite the stem end and tie a knot. Tie the two free ends together.

    • 3

Remove peanut butter from the jar with a butter knife and spread about 1/4 cup generously (you may need more or less depending on the size of the pine cone) around the bracts to completely cover the pine cone.

    • 4

Hold the pine cone over a large bowl and sprinkle 1/8 cup of birdseed onto the peanut butter, covering it completely.

    • 5

Hang your bird feeder on the tree by the ribbon loop.
