How to Paint Concrete Figures

Concrete is a popular material used in both indoor and outdoor figures and statuaries because it's durable, readily available and less expensive than marble or granite. The appearance of a concrete statute can be altered with a fresh coat of paint. This paint can also help protect the cement from nicks and cracks, and may extend the life of the statue, especially if it is exposed to harsh elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the cement figure with water. A smaller figure can be placed under a kitchen faucet, while a larger, outdoor piece can be cleaned with a garden hose. Allow the piece to dry completely.

    • 2

Remove any dust or debris from the piece with a feather duster or a soft cloth.

    • 3

Apply a layer of black acrylic paint to the entire statue. An airless sprayer can be used regardless of the size of the piece. A more intricate figure may need to be covered with a smaller paintbrush to cover all the nooks and crannies.

    • 4

Allow the acrylic paint to dry.

    • 5

Apply a coat of the chosen color of acrylic or masonry paint to the piece. An airbrush can once again be used. If a small, traditional paintbrush is used, allow the first coat to dry, and then apply a second coat.

    • 6

Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Apply a coat of concrete sealer with a paintbrush. This will help protect the paint underneath from chipping. Allow this concrete sealer to dry for 24 hours.
