If you have terra-cotta pots, paint them decoratively and place them around your lawn, deck and patio. Select brightly colored paint which you have leftover from a different project. Using leftover paint is an easy way to make a decorative outdoor item. If you do not have plants planted in your terra-cotta pots, store lawn items in them for easy access, such as bug spray.
Recycle your aluminum cans and glass jars into outdoor decorations. Poke holes in tin cans with a screwdriver and tie a string through the top of the can. Hang the cans on tree branches and place a small candle in them. Lighting the candles at night decoratively decorates your yard while providing light. Place a small amount of sand in the bottom of glass jars and place small candles on the sand. Line the glass jars on your deck, patio or walkway, and light the candles at night.
If you have a large collection of birdhouses or other outdoor decorative items, hang them on a fence. Group the items together in a manner resembling a garland. Birdhouses, pinwheels and thermometers work well for this outdoor decorative item. Displaying a collection of items on your fence spruces up a bare fence, and creates a conversation piece for when friends and neighbors visit as some of your favorite items are displayed for them to see.
Line up three or four armless outdoor chairs you currently do not use. Paint a large piece of scrap wood with leftover wood paint. Place the painted piece of scrap wood on top of seats on the chairs to create the seat of an outdoor bench. Place an item such as a painted terra-cotta pot at one end of the bench as an added decorative touch.
Check your home and garage for old dishes you do not use any more to create a decorative garden dish tower. Stack the dishes high in your garden to create the tower. Arrange the dishes to the most pleasing and sturdy placement, and secure them with a hot glue gun and glue sticks. If you place a bowl on the top of the dish tower, you can create a bird bath for your garden.
