How to Make a Head on a Life Size Scarecrow

A scarecrow is more than just a character in "The Wizard of Oz." Life-sized scarecrows may be used to scare away magpies, crows or other birds from a garden. A scarecrow may also be used as a fall, harvest or Halloween prop. It is simple to make a scarecrow body by pinning together old clothing and stuffing it with straw. The head requires a little more work.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread newspaper over a table to keep it clean.

    • 2

Place the plastic craft pumpkin on the table so that it is flat-side down and facing you. Craft pumpkins are thin-shelled plastic pumpkins that resemble real pumpkins. They may be purchased at hobby and craft stores in the fall.

    • 3

Sketch a set of eyes, a nose and a mouth over the surface of the pumpkin. You can make your pumpkin face resemble a jack-o-lantern or a rag doll face.

Squeeze a dollop of black acrylic craft paint onto your newspaper. Use a paint brush to outline your pumpkin's facial features, including the eyes, nose and mouth. If you are painting a doll's face, you may also wish to add pink dots for the cheeks. Allow the black to dry before adding another layer of color. Build up each color individually and wait for it to dry before adding the next layer of color. Mix the acrylic paints on the newspaper or stick with the primary colors.

Allow your pumpkin to dry completely before placing it on top of your scarecrow's neck. You can anchor the head in place by running a stick through the scarecrow's shirt that protrudes out of the top of the shirt like a neck. Cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin with a utility knife and place the head onto the neck.
