DIY: Concrete Garden Walkway

Trudging through the mud trying to get from one side of the flower garden to the other is messy and frustrating. A gravel path is easy to install but the gravel has a tendency to scatter or sink into the soil. A solid concrete walkway requires three 60 lb. bags for every 4 square feet of concrete if poured 4-inches thick. Assemble a concrete garden walkway with a paver form and save time and money.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig out a path 24-inches wide and 4-inches deep.

    • 2

Spread a 3-inch layer of sand in the pathway.

    • 3

Put 2 gallons of water in the wheelbarrow. Add the bag of ready-mix concrete. Add enough water so the cement is pourable but not soupy. Start with 3 gallons. The website Cement.org says to add no more than 6 gallons total for each bag. Exactly how much is dependent on how dry the air is and how much, if any, moisture the ready-mix cement has absorbed. Mix thoroughly with the spade.

    • 4

Put the mold where you want the stepping stones.

    • 5

Fill the mold with the mixed cement. Let it rest for five minutes. Then pull up the mold. The pavers will remain on the sand.

    • 6

Repeat until the walkway is finished.

    • 7

Spray the pavers with water to keep them moist. Cover with plastic to retain moisture for at least 24 hours.
