How do I Design Two Waterfalls From a Single Pump?

A water feature can give a sense of serenity to almost any backyard. A pond is a common feature in many gardens, but requires aeration to make it a healthy home for plants and animals. Waterfalls are a simple way to both filter and aerate the water. Two waterfalls add drama and majesty to the simple backyard pond. There are two simple ways to create double waterfalls. But before deciding on a design, make sure your pump can handle the water flow. In general the pump must handle 100 gph (gallons per hour) for every inch of width in the waterfall.

Instructions

  1. Double Water Fall From a Single Weir

    • 1

Install the pump at the lowest point of the pond. Be sure to read the manufacturer's directions thoroughly. Some pumps are submerged in the pond, while others are installed next to the pond with a water inlet hose that is draped into the pond.

    • 2

Run the water outlet tubing along the edge of the pond to the waterfall lift. The waterfall lift is a pipe, usually black, that lifts the water to the top of the waterfall. The top of the lift has an outlet that either spills the water into a weir, or can be attached to another tube.

    • 3

Install the waterfall lift. If the waterfall is following the natural contours of a hill, simply dig a hole and install the lift. If the natural ground is fairly flat, secure the lift and build up the area around the lift with earth and stones.

    • 4

Create the weir. A weir is simply a small pool that spills out in a waterfall. Create the weir by placing a small pond liner around the top of the waterfall lift. Lay stones to camouflage the liner. Pile small stones to direct the water toward your pond.

    • 5

Split the stream of water with piles of stones that create a natural looking double waterfall. Stone placement is a personal art. Try many different configurations until you are satisfied.

    Double Waterfall From Two Weirs

    • 6

Install the pump. Run the tube to the waterfall lift. Install the weirs for both of the waterfalls.

    • 7

Choose a spot equidistant from both waterfalls to install the waterfall lift. Be sure that the lift is at least 1 inch higher than the highest weir.

    • 8

Install a T-shaped valve at the top of the waterfall lift. Measure the distance from the waterfall lift to each of the weirs and cut tubing to fit.

    • 9

Attach tubing to either side of the valve and lay the open end of the tube in each of the weirs. Make sure that the tubes are descending from the valve to the weir.

    • 10

Camouflage the weir and the waterfall lift with rocks, stones and water plants.
