How to Use Multiple Colors on Stepping Stones

Garden stepping stones can be as colorful as the yards and gardens in which they're placed. By combining different colors and designs on stepping stones, you can create a visually interesting walkway for the yard and garden. Concrete stepping stones can be painted and designs can be applied using stencils or freehand techniques. Concrete stepping stones should be painted with concrete paint, so the surface won't peel or chip. A color wheel can simplify selecting the colors for compatibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash off the stepping stones if they're dirty. If they're clean, sweep them to remove any loose dirt or dust. Let them dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Create your design, using one you want to replicate or make up your own. Use paint colors based on the colors in your yard, patio or garden so they match the surroundings. Employ colors you like or use color wheels to find colors compatible with each other. Limit the number of colors you use on the stepping stones to avoid visual confusion.

If you use a color wheel, complementary colors are opposite each other and analogous colors are next to each other. The cool colors on a wheel are the blue, green and purple and the warm colors are yellow, red and orange. When using the concrete paint colors, tints will make the colors you want lighter and shades will make the colors you want darker. You can use a combination of complementary colors mixed with analogous colors.

Place newspapers or a drop cloth on the work surface. Secure it with tape, table clamps or heavy objects if you're working outside.

    • 4

Tape off the areas of the stepping stone that you don't want to paint with the color you're using. Allow plenty of time for the first coat of concrete paint to dry before using masking tape. If not sufficiently dry, the paint could pull off when you remove the tape. When using stencils, allow the paint is dry before lifting the stencil to avoid drips or smudges.

Let the painted stones dry sufficiently before placing in the yard. Place the stones no higher than a half inch above the ground to avoid tripping over them.
