Decide what the sign will say and the shape you wish to use. Unless you are already set on your wording, consider the following: "Welcome" is always sure to please, or you can display your family's last name, address number, "Welcome to our home," or a saying that best suits your personality.
After you have decided what you would like your sign to say as well where you will place your sign, you should have a rough idea of what size you would like for the sign. You can purchase blank wood signs in all shapes and sizes at your local arts and crafts store.
You can also make your own sign. Visit your local hardware store, purchase a piece of wood suitable to your project and screw or nail a stake into the back of it. If you have tools for wood, such as a jigsaw or something similar, you can get a little more creative in designing the shape of your sign.
Time to paint. Make sure you primer or seal your sign prior to continuing on with your project. This will help your sign last longer. Choose the design you would like to put on the sign.
Decorate your sign. You can buy self-adhesive letters or numbers from a hardware store, or you can hand-paint your sign. If you are a little uneasy about decorating the sign yourself, you can purchase carbon paper to trace the design onto your sign.
In using carbon paper, first place the paper wax-side down onto the sign. Then place the design you would like to transfer onto the sign on top of the paper. Trace the design using a pen or pencil. Once you are done tracing, remove both the design and the carbon paper to view your tracing on the sign.
