How to Train a Puppy for an Invisible Fence

Install an invisible fence in your yard to help keep your puppy from running away. Invisible fences send a slight shock through a receiver in the puppy's collar when they cross the property line. Teach your puppy to respond to this shock by backing away from the invisible fencing. Once you've completed your training, you should be able to let your puppy loose in your yard without fear of your pet running away after joggers or cars traveling down the road.

Instructions

Put your puppy on a leash. Walk to the edge of the electric field. Turn and quickly walk back to the center of the yard. Your puppy should follow you. Praise him when he does. Lead him firmly to the center of the yard if he doesn't automatically follow. Continue doing this five times per day until your puppy automatically walks back into the yard.

Walk to the edge of the electric fence with your leashed puppy and a friend. Have you friend continue walking away from you. If the puppy follows the friend, it will get shocked by the collar. Lead him back into the center of the yard, then praise him. Try this at several different parts of the boundary fives times per day until your puppy stops following your friend over the invisible fence.

    • 3

Stand at the edge of the fence with your leashed dog. Have a friend jog by. See if your puppy follows. If he doesn't, try the same exercise with a bike and later, with a friend in a car. Continue training the puppy with larger distractions until he doesn't rush over the fence when temptations cross by on the road. Focus on one distraction at a time.

Take the leash off your puppy. Spend time with him in the yard, seeing how he reacts to different distractions and passersby.

    • 5

Observe the puppy from inside your house. Watch to be sure he doesn't run over the fence when you aren't obviously present.
