A swag is a bundle of greenery that is typically triangular or diamond shaped. It's adorned with evergreen boughs, ribbons, fruit, pine cones and other elements taken from the outdoors.
Homeowners usually feature decorative swags around the end-of-the-year holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, along with wreaths and garlands. However, these decorative pieces can be used and adapted to the seasons. For example, a springtime swag that's hung on the front door might feature evergreens, spring flowers and pastel ribbons. (See Resources for instructions to create a swag.)
Decorative swags look great on the front door, where they draw attention to the door as a focal point. However, would-be outdoor decorators can hang a swag on a front-lawn lamppost, on the frame of an outdoor front porch swing, or around the corners of outdoor windows.
