Safe Paints for Birdfeeders

Once you have decided to add a birdfeeder to your outdoor space, you may be concerned about how safe it is for the birds that will flock to it or for the environment in general. While it is important to consider the environmental impact of any chemicals, including those contained in paint, there are fortunately many varieties of paints that are designed to be used safely outdoors, as they minimize any negative effects on the environment.
  1. Zero VOC Paints

    • Paints labeled as having zero volatile organic compounds, or VOC's, are free of chemicals which release toxins into the air. Because the manufacturers of these paints have found ways to produce high-performance paints without VOC's, these are ideal for use on a birdfeeder.

Some examples of zero VOC paint are Acro Pure by Miller Paint, Bioshield Natural Paints, Enviro-Pure, and Mythic Paints.

    Low VOC Paints

    • Some paints which cannot boast being totally free of VOC's are still safe bets for painting your birdfeeder. Low VOC paint can be quite safe, provided that it passes industry ratings for safety and non-toxicity.

Some examples of these paints, which meet or exceed industry standards and boast low VOC's are Aura by Benjamin Moore, Auro paints, Cloverdale paints, Devinegreen by Miller Paint.

    Mold and Mildew Resistant Paints

    • If you live in an area where mold and mildew thrive, consider using a paint that has been developed for the purpose of inhibiting the growth of these organisms, which can pose health risks to people and animals.

Some examples of these are Horizon by Rodda, Solace by ColorWheel Paint, which are also low VOC paints, and Refresh by Dutch Boy, which is a zero VOC paint.
