Lubricate the insides of the molds with petroleum jelly, making sure to get into all the cracks and crevices. Set them on a flat, even surface for filling.
Set any decorations such as flat marbles, river pebbles or mosaic tiles into the base of the molds, arranging them carefully into a design.
Mix the cement with water in a bucket according to the directions on the bag. Use a trowel or hoe to work the mixture until it has the consistency of soft pudding. Mix in any coloring powder now.
Shovel the first layer of concrete into your mold, using a small hand shovel. Fill the mold halfway full, being careful not to disturb any decorations placed in the bottom of the mold.
Add a section of chicken wire, cut to fit the mold using the tin snips. Lay the chicken wire flat on the wet concrete; the chicken wire adds stability to the pavers. Layer more concrete on top of the chicken wire until the mold is full.
Tap the sides of the mold for about a minute to dislodge any air bubbles trapped in the wet cement.
Dry the molds for two days without moving them so the concrete has a chance to set up and harden.
Invert the pavers and pull off the mold. Set the cast pavers or stepping stones aside to cure for a week before setting them into the garden.
