How to Put a Halyard on a Flagpole

Halyards are the ropes used with a pulley system (called a sheave) to raise and lower flags and sails of a sailboat. Halyards have two clips or snaps attached to them to connect to the flag or sail. There is not much skill required when attaching a halyard to a flagpole other than knowing how to tie a fisherman's knot.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread your halyard through the sheave.

    • 2

Attach a snap to the halyard by pushing a loop through the end and over the top of the snap and then pulling tight.

    • 3

Attach the other snap to the halyard by pushing a loop through the end and over the top of the snap and then pulling tight.

    • 4

Space the snaps the correct distance apart by measuring against your flag's grommets.

    • 5

Place the two loose ends of the ropes side by side.

    • 6

Tie an overhand knot with a 3-inch tail in both ends. Do not tighten the knots.

    • 7

Thread each tail through the hole in the other knot.

    • 8

Tighten the overhand knots around the tail of the other thread.

    • 9

      Pull the two knots together.

    • 10

Tape the loose ends of the knots to the ropes.
