How to Make a Glass Bottle Tree

The bottle tree was originally created to capture and destroy evil spirits. The belief was that spirits would become trapped in the bottles during the night and when the dawn broke, the light would kill them. Blue bottles were the original color choice for bottle trees because it was believed the blue lured evil spirits. Today, bottle trees can be found dotting the countryside in the Southern U.S. Although, you could purchase a premade bottle tree, making one is less expensive and requires just a little effort.

Instructions

Use a 1/2 inch drill bit to make 2-1/2 inch deep holes along your 4 inch by 4 inch by 144 inch post. Drill the holes at a 45 degree angle for best results. The holes should be spaced a minimum of eight inches apart on the length of the pole. Also, stagger the holes on each side so that your finished tree will not be symmetrical. The number of holes depends on the number of bottles you want to hang.

Insert one dowel rod into each hole. The dowel rods should be 10 inches in length and 1/2 inch in diameter. If necessary, sand the inside of the holes using a medium grit sandpaper to remove rough edges and make it easier to insert the dowel rods.

Dig a hole that is 4 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. The holes should be two feet deep. Insert the post with the dowel rods into the hole. Add dirt around the post to secure it in place.

Clean enough empty wine bottles so you will have one bottle for each dowel rod. Use soap and water to clean them and allow them to dry completely. Also remove the labels from the bottles to allow for more light refraction through the bottles. If you are unable to peel the labels off the bottles, allow them to soak in soap and water for 15 minutes and then peel the labels away.

Hang one cleaned bottle from each dowel rod to finish your tree.
