Fence Post Craft Ideas

Fence posts are functional, but once they're no longer being used for their intended purpose, they can be used for crafts around the house to add a decorative touch. Using recycled fence posts for crafting keeps the cost of crafting materials down. Tailor these crafts to fit your personal tastes, time available for crafting and budget.
  1. Fence-Post Pumpkins

    • Old round, wooden fence posts can be turned into decorative pumpkins that will last from year to year. Paint the fence post orange and paint the face of a pumpkin. Cover the entire post with two coats of varnish to keep the craft looking fresh and protected year after year. Embellish the pumpkin with spider webs or plastic spiders to give it a spooky look.

    Welcome Fence Posts

    • Use old wooden, stake-style fence posts to create personalized signs to hang on your porch. You could have one post for each family member and decorate it to match that person's interests. For instance, if a teenage girl is into ballet and music, her post could have ballet slippers and musical notes painted on it, along with her name. Allow each family member to choose what goes on his fence post. If you'd rather just have one post, you could simply write "Welcome" or "Welcome to the Smiths' Home." The fence posts also could be used to decorate the inside of the home, as well. For instance, next to a bedroom, attach a fence post with the occupant's name. Before painting the fence posts with decorative sayings, sand and finish them to give them a nicer look.

    Decoupage Fence Posts

    • Cover an old fence post with old seed packets or pictures of seeds to create a colorful holder for a bird feeder. Glue the old seed packets or photos onto the fence post with a basic glue. Once the post is covered as much as you'd like, spread varnish over the entire post. You'll need to do several coats--maybe as many as eight or 10--until the post looks as if the packets or pictures are simply part of the post. Push the post into the ground near a window. Attach a bird feeder to the top of the post in any way you prefer. You could simply hang a simple feeder around the post. Fill the feeder with seeds to attract local birds.
