Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a kit for an 8-foot decorative windmill. These can be found at home goods stores.

    • 2

Choose a location for your windmill. The space should be flat and sturdy. It should also be open to the wind and not blocked by any tall buildings or trees. The blades of the windmill will need wind to turn. An 8-foot tall windmill will have a base of 32 inches by 32 inches and a fan with a diameter of 30 inches.

    • 3

Build a stand for the windmill. Pine is supplied with the windmill kit. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for building and installing the stand on the flat surface.

    • 4

Assemble the windmill if necessary. If a windmill is shipped, it will require assembly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to put the windmill together.

    • 5

Anchor the windmill to the stand and the ground. Drill a hole in the center of the stand. Insert an auger into this hole and into the ground. Attach a steel cable to the top of the auger. Use a turn buckle attachment to tighten the auger and stand into the ground. Drill holes in the corners of the stand. The holes should be located where each of the four feet of the windmill will sit. Insert rebar into each of the holes.

    • 6

Assemble the fan of the windmill if necessary. If the windmill has been shipped, it will need assembly. Follow the manufacturer's specific instructions for the assembly of your particular windmill.

    • 7

Lay the windmill stand flat on the ground.

    • 8

Secure the fan of the windmill to the base of the windmill. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to connect the mounting brackets using screws and a screwdriver.

    • 9

Stand the fan and base upright. A second person should be used for this portion.

    • 10

Place the fan and base on the pine stand. Insert the four rebar posts into the legs of the base. Hook one end of the steel cable into the latch under the fan in the center of the top of the base.

    • 11

Test the stability of the windmill. Attempt to shake it. It should be solid on the pine stand with no room for movement.
