Ornaments and statues have enriched public and private gardens around the world for more than 2,000 years. From worshiped idols to war heroes, bronzed animals and abstract art, garden ornamentation has been and continues to be an integral part of gardens everywhere.
Garden ornaments come from a wide range of materials. Historically, iron, bronze and stone comprised the majority of garden decor. Modern ornament construction includes plastic, glass, cement, wood, metal and a myriad of recycled items, including tires and bottles. Imagination is the limit with regard to what can be used to form garden sculpture and ornaments.
Depending on the desired effect, garden ornaments and sculptures take on many forms. Practical decor such as bird baths, stepping stones and sculpted furniture add a degree of functionality to a garden. Statues and fountains are commonly used as focal points, while wind chimes and planters add subtly to any space. Personal preference, budget and desired effect will determine the type and placement of garden decor.
