The Best Bird Feeders in High Wind

Bird feeders are an effective way to attract birds. Many types of bird feeders do not hold up well in areas with high wind conditions. Gusts of wind can knock the bird feeders down or knock all of the food out of the feeder. Some types of bird feeders are less affected by wind. Some types of birds are only attracted to specific types of feeders. It may be difficult to attract these birds in high wind areas without the correct type of feeder.
  1. Suet Feeders

    • A suet feeder is basically a wire cage with a suet cake placed inside. This feeder is suspended from a tree branch. It primarily attracts woodpeckers and Northern Flickers. This particular feeder works well in high wind conditions. A good amount of wind blows straight through the cage, not affecting the feeder. It is not easily damaged, even if it gets knocked out of the tree. The suet cake cannot be blown out of the cage, as well.

    Pole-Mounted Feeders

    • Pole-mounted feeders are designed primarily to prevent squirrels from getting into the bird feeder. This type of feeder also works well in high wind conditions. The feeder is directly mounted onto the pole, which means the wind would have to blow down the entire structure to knock the feeder down. Securing the pole in concrete should prevent the wind from blowing the feeder around. Pole-mounted feeders with the food in an enclosed container is the best option. This design prevents the wind from blowing the food out of the feeder.

    Ground Feeders

    • Mourning doves and cardinals are usually attracted to ground feeders. The advantage of a ground feeder in high wind conditions is its mobility. Not being attached to anything, this type of feeder is easily taken in before a storm or high wind.
