Precast stone is concrete made to resemble granite, limestone, bluestone, quartz or other stone. It is cast to look realistic but shaped in identical blocks for ease of installation and design. Use it like brick or pavers. It is a good choice for a natural border look around a water feature or along the edge of a walkway. Precast stone edging that sits above ground level prevents a gravel or bark path from spilling out of its track. It requires a lawn edger at that height because a lawnmower can't ride over it. Partly burying the faux stone edging makes it seem more like a natural feature and is a physical barrier to prevent the lawn from growing into the garden.
Concrete curbing is 4-inches high and 6-inches wide and comes in many colors. It defines flowerbeds, separates a lawn from a driveway or marks the edge of a path. If lawn mowing is an issue, use mower's edge curbs. They curve down so one half of the edging is flush with the level of mowed grass and the mower glides over without hitting them. This curbing is smooth and uniform, all one color, and as defined as the trim on the house. It outlines, and so does not blend in and appear to be part of the natural landscape. Concrete curbs and mower's edge curbs give a patio, garden or lawn a professional finish.
Stamped concrete curbing has designs cast into it. It may look like bricks or stamped in the pattern of short, separated blocks, even when it comes in long sections. Stamped edging can feature a decorative geometric design or something softer, such as a fleur-de-lis. The design may be highlighted with color or simply impressed in a solid color block. It is not cast stone but can be stamped to resemble stone and be multicolored, so the effect seems real. Stamped curbing comes in angled edges and curved edges, so it is easy to shape into rounded, squared or rectangular borders. This curbing is sometimes used for the edges of raised flowerbeds.
Concrete borders used to separate lawns from paths come with integrated lighting, so that night walks are safer and gardens can be highlighted for evening viewing.
