How to Build a Bamboo Wind Chime

Bamboo wind chimes have been used for thousands of years. Originally designed to scare birds from rice paddies, bamboo wind chimes are now also used as decorative accents in home gardens and public areas. Bamboo has naturally hollow segments, making it an ideal material for a wind chime. Working with fresh or partly dried bamboo cane to build a bamboo wind chime helps prevent splintering. Dried bamboo can snap or splinter, rendering it useless for a bamboo wind chime.

Instructions

    • 1

Saw a 12-inch length of bamboo from a four-foot bamboo cane with a serrated knife. Cut grooves in two-inch increments along the top of the 12-inch segment as it is laid lengthwise. You will have a total of five grooves---one each at the two, four, six, eight and 10 inch measurements along the stalk. Grooves should be approximately 1/2 inch deep, and cutting into the hollow part of the bamboo is acceptable.

    • 2

Hammer a small nail approximately one inch from the end of the top of the segment. Remove the nail to expose a hole. Create another hole on the opposite end of the top of the bamboo segment. Thread a two-foot piece of twine into one hole, through the hollow bamboo stalk and out the other hole. Do not tie the ends of the twine together at this time.

Cut a four-inch length of bamboo from the original stalk using a serrated knife. Using a hammer and small nail, poke two holes on either side of the four-inch segment approximately one inch from the top.

    • 4

Thread an eight-inch piece of twine through both holes, ensuring both ends meet and are of equal lengths when pulled and held above the segment of bamboo. Tie the ends together securely.

    • 5

Place the tied-off twine into the left-most groove in the 12-inch segment of bamboo. Pull the four-inch segment firmly to ensure the twine is snugly secured in the groove.

    • 6

Repeat each step using five-, six-, seven- and eight-inch segments of bamboo.

    • 7

Tie the ends of the two-foot length of twine together to create a sling by which to hang your bamboo wind chime. You may affix a hook to the twine or hang it from an existing hook.
