How to Make Mosaic Stepping Stones Made With Grout & Pre-Made Stepping Stones

Creating your own mosaic tiles adds intrigue to your garden. Even kids can make a stepping stone mosaic, with some help. Using a pre-made stepping stone as a base for your mosaic will give you an outline of how big it should be, and will help you ensure your mosaic is durable enough to withstand wear and tear outdoors. Whether you plan on actually walking on these stones or using them for decoration purposes only is up to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a design on your pre-made stepping stone by laying the decorative pebbles or stained glass on top. Do not glue them down yet; use trial and error to create a design by moving pieces around. If you need smaller pieces, use a hammer to smash them.

    • 2

Glue the pebbles or stained glass pieces to the pre-made stepping stone. Leave 1/8 inch between each piece so that the grout will be able to cement each piece on.

    • 3

Mix the grout according to the package directions. Each brand and package is slightly different, so be sure to follow what the package says exactly.

    • 4

Pour the grout over the top of your design. Use a paintbrush to shove the grout off of your design and into the spaces between.

    • 5

Wipe the surface of your stepping stone clean using hot water and a wash rag. The hotter the water, the better it will help dissolve the cement on the top of your decorative stones or stained glass. This must be done before the grout completely dries, otherwise removing chunks from your mosaic design could result in a pebble or piece of stained glass coming loose.

Set the stepping stone in a warm, dry place to dry. If the grout gets wet, it can grow mold or not dry thoroughly.
