Easy-to-Make Windsocks

Windsocks are decor that you hang outside on your patio or from the trees in your lawn area. The windsocks rise and fall when they are inflated and deflated by the wind. They are often colorful and have long streamers. The windsock makes the area look festive and it is soothing to watch the streamers float and flap in the wind. Making a homemade windsock is easy to do by using basic craft supplies. This is an interesting way to teach children about the effects of the wind. It is also useful and inexpensive decor for an outdoor party during nice weather.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip out of the construction paper, 6 by 18 inches. Windsocks that you purchase are often made of waterproof fabrics and have detailed animal or other shapes. Duplicating one like that would require a sewing machine and artistic skills. This particular windsock is easy to make and perfect for a temporary outdoor party decoration or a funky way to supply interest indoors.

    • 2

Use colored markers, acrylic paint, faux gems, glitter glue, crayons or stickers to decorate the strip. Allow any paint or glitter glue to dry.

    • 3

Unroll the crepe paper streamers. Cut them into 26-inch lengths. You will need nine separate streamers to decorate the windsock.

    • 4

Glue one end of each streamer to the bottom edge -- the undecorated side -- of the construction paper strip. Allow the streamers to dry.

    • 5

Form a tube by placing the two ends of the construction paper strip together, overlapping them about one inch. The decorated side needs to be facing out. Staple the two ends together.

    • 6

Cut a piece of heavy twine or string into a 30-inch length.

    • 7

Make a knot in each end of the twine.

    • 8

Attach the knotted ends onto the inside edge of the construction paper tube by stapling them. This forms a handle. This allows you to hang the windsock on a nail or tree branch.
