How to Make a Grapevine Tree Using a Tomato Cage

Tomato cages are designed to support tomato plants as they grow. Many are formed of metal, narrow at the bottom and wide on top. They form a perfect tree shape when turned upside-down. They are especially good for making holiday trees, as most home gardeners are not using their tomato cages during the winter. Save some money on decorations during the holiday season. Dust off a tomato cage and use it to make a lovely and inexpensive grapevine tree.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the tomato cage on a secure surface so that the wide, round part is on the bottom. Use a rubber band to tie the top "spokes" together.

    • 2

Soak dried grapevines in water to make them pliable. This may take a day or two, depending on the thickness of the vines. You can purchase grapevine in wreath form or in bunches at most craft stores. Or, if you have a neighbor who has grapevines, ask her for some when she prunes her grapes in the fall, and use them while they are still soft and green.

    • 3

Slip on some gloves to protect your hands, and start wrapping the grapevines around the tomato cage. Work from the bottom up, attaching them to the cage as you go with floral or cable wire.

    • 4

Continue wrapping until the entire cage is covered. You may have to use smaller sections at the top. Use pruning shears to cut the grapevine into manageable sections.

    • 5

Add a strand of white lights and some pine cones, holly, berries and moss for a rustic look, or decorate your tree with colorful holiday decorations. To anchor the tree, fill an urn or other container with floral foam, and then attach the base of the tree to the foam with floral pins.
