Welded Garden Art Projects

Welding projects vary in skill level and complexity. Choose garden projects within your skill set to create objects that will add a point of interest to your garden. Whether you decide to design something purely artistic like a sculpture or jazz up something functional like a bench, welding is a method that will weather the elements and help you design eye-catching pieces of art.
  1. Trellis

    • Take the standard lattice-style trellis and give it a makeover. Use metal and weld it into modern shapes for your plants to climb. Use wood to make a frame and weld wavy or straight lengths of metal together to create a grid for the plants. In summer months this will function as art and trellis but in winter months you will have a free-standing wall of art. Experiment with different designs and place structures of differing sizes in optimal places in your garden.

    Bench

    • Jazz up a garden bench plan by adding decorative arms and feet. Another idea is to design a metal back piece with the arms attached to it. Ideas include your family name, birds, geometric patterns and floral designs. Combine the metal back rest with a wooden seat for a handsome bench you can show off anywhere in your garden. Add planters to the bench, on one side or both, for an additional function. The bench can also be painted with weather-resistant metal paint for a different look.

    Sculpture

    • Animals are a popular theme for metal garden art, especially birds, rabbits and frogs. Use one type of animal or litter a few of them amongst the plants in your garden. Other ideas include fairies, plants and flowers. Abstract art is a welcome addition to most yards. Place it as a focal point in front of your house or to enhance a forgotten corner in your backyard. Abstract art can be as big or small as you wish but take into consideration the size of your yard and build something accordingly.

    Weather Vane

    • Design a weather vane for your garden by choosing a theme or an image to add to it. Commonly roosters, horses and rabbits are used but you can customize the weather vane to your own liking. Ideas include a house, a hot air balloon, geometric shapes and anything else you can think of to add a little artistic flare to your weather vane design. Experiment with different metals to obtain new looks. The weather vane can also be painted or left bare.
