Allow the gourd to dry in a cool dry location for two weeks. Turn the gourd every two days. When the gourd is light and papery, it has been sufficiently dried.
Soak the dried gourd in a large bucket filled with water for one hour. Rub the gourd skin off with rags to ensure the adherence of the paint.
Drill a hole the size of your fist in the lower front half of the gourd, using the rotary drill.
Clean out the inside of the gourd with a spoon. Sandpaper the inside and outside of the gourd smooth with the sandpaper.
Drill a dime-sized drainage hole at the bottom of the gourd. Drill a dime-sized hole directly across the large hole. Drill a dime-sized hole at the top of the gourd.
Paint the inside and outside of the dried gourd with the primer paint. Let the paint dry for two hours. Paint the inside and outside of the gourd with the grey paint. Let dry for two hours.
Tie a double knot in one end of the twine. Thread the unknotted end of the twine through the hole on the top of the gourd for attachment to a tree limb.
Insert the wooden dowel through the large front home and small back home to serve as a perch for birds.
