How to Make a Terra Cotta Bird Bath

Birds bring life to a garden and are entertaining to watch. To encourage birds to visit your garden and fill it with movement, give them a place to drink and bathe in with a terra cotta bird bath. Birds will feel safe while bathing in this bird bath because the basin's rim gives the birds a perch to sit on while the water is shallow enough for them to stand in. A terra cotta bird bath looks great in any garden and is sure to coax some feathered friends into your yard.

18-inch terra cotta saucer
Masking tape
Acrylic sealer
24-inch or taller terra cotta urn with 12-inch rim
Gravel or sand
Epoxy adhesive

Instructions

  Choose a location for your bird bath. Ensure visiting birds are safe from predators by choosing a location that allows them to see all around them. Avoid placing the bird bath underneath a tree or fallen leaves will fill the birdbath's basin.

  Apply masking tape to the entire length of the 18-inch terra cotta saucer's outer rim.

  Use a paintbrush to coat the interior of the saucer with an acrylic sealer. The sealer will clog the pores of the interior of the saucer, allowing it to hold water and giving it a shiny appearance. Apply three coats total, allowing each coat to dry completely in between.

  Pull off the masking tape, leaving a straight line of demarcation around the rim.

  Set the terra cotta urn in the location you have chosen.

  Fill the urn ¾ full with gravel or sand to weigh it down.

  Mix a two-part epoxy according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  Apply a thick bead of epoxy adhesive to the rim of the urn and set the bottom of the saucer on top of the urn. Adjust the saucer until it is evenly positioned.

  Allow the epoxy to dry completely before you fill the saucer with water.
