A Homemade Birdfeeder

As many homeowners know, attracting birds to your yard can be a very pleasing experience. Not only are birds fun to watch, but some of them eat annoying insects and grubs that can harm your yard. One way to attract some feathered friends to your yard is to set out a bird feeder. There are a variety of models to choose from in stores, but you can make one yourself from simple household items, many of which you would have thrown out anyway.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse out an empty paper milk or orange carton with warm water. Allow the carton to completely dry. If you place birdseed in it while it is still wet, the birdseed can become gummy and start to rot.

    • 2

Cut out a large rectangle from one side of the milk or juice carton using scissors or a pocket knife. Start your cut about a third of the way from the bottom of the carton. Do not cut any closer to the bottom of the cartoon, or the birdseed can spill out too easily.

    • 3

Cut out another rectangular window on the side directly across from the first. Try to cut both windows the same size to help keep weight distributed evenly. Do not cut windows into the other two sides of the carton --- leave them solid.

    • 4

Place a small piece of duct tape over the middle of the top of the carton. Use the scissors or small pocket knife to punch a hole through the spot you just taped.

    • 5

Thread a piece of heavy twine, string or wire through the hole at the top of the carton. Tie the two loose ends of the string or wire together to form a loop.

    • 6

Fill your new bird feeder with birdseed. Do not fill the feeder all the way up to the edge of the windows, as it will spill. Stop filling the feeder about one inch from the edge of the windows.

    • 7

Hang the bird feeder from a tree branch in your yard.
