Flags

• Flags are some of the most inexpensive decor items. Large flags can be hung on traditional vertical flagpoles or on flagpoles that attach to the house. Garden flags are much smaller and are placed on holders that are inserted into the ground. Flags come in a wide variety of designs, from seasonal to patriotic. Hang one from your house and change it with the holidays, or place smaller, flower-patterned garden flags among the flowers in your cutting garden or lining your walkway.

Statuary

• Statuary ranges from large, permanent sculptures to smaller items that you can move around in your yard. Small animal statues such as rabbits and dogs add a cute touch to a child's garden. If you are a bird lover, try a birdbath, which is both attractive and functional. Gazing or reflective domes look elegant in an English or Asian garden.

Redwood is also a durable material for outdoor furniture. A fun furniture option is to install a swing from a tree or porch. Furniture accessories can also be decorative. Colorful umbrellas offer shade and add a decorative touch to a seating area in your yard, and cheerfully patterned seat cushions add comfort and beauty.

Whimsical

• Whimsical yard decor can be a conversation piece or simply something to make you smile. Garden gnomes, for example, come in a wide variety of silly characters. Flamingos are classic whimsical yard decor. Seasonal items such as lit-up snowmen or spooky skeletons are also fun choices.

Lights

• Lights add safety and a decorative touch to any yard. Use solar lights to line a walkway to your front door or to highlight the edges of your yard. Hang solar lanterns from the low branches of a tree, or wind strings of white lights around the topiaries flanking your front door. Spotlights can be used to highlight other yard decor, such as a large fountain.
