How to Make a Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder

If you enjoy attracting birds and watching the various kinds you can bring toward your home, then add a bird feeder to your yard to increase the bird population. A bird feeder is filled with seed for the types of birds in your area, and then hung up to attract them. While this seems like an ideal system, there may be one thing you're forgetting: squirrels. Squirrels also like the bird seed inside your feeder. Luckily, there are things you can do to make a squirrel-proof bird feeder for your yard.

Instructions

Attach baffles to the top and bottom of your bird feeder. Baffles are slick metal domes or tubes that prevent squirrels from jumping on top of the bird feeder by reducing traction. Screw a dome-shaped baffle onto the top of the bird feeder to keep squirrels out from above. They tend to work best on feeders that are thin enough to be covered by the dome. The bottom baffle is a tube that slides onto the pole your bird feeder will be connected to. This keeps squirrels from climbing up to the seeds.

Drive the pole with the bottom baffle connected into the ground. Choose a location that squirrels cannot easily access from trees or porches. Drive poles into the ground with a hammer, but you may need to make a starter hole by digging with a shovel.

Place your bird feeder on top of the pole. The bird feeder generally attaches with a power screwdriver and screws. Secure so it does not topple when birds try to access the seeds inside.
