Uses of Bird Baths

Bird baths decorate your garden giving visiting birds a place to bathe, drink and play. Repurposing a bird bath gives it new life when you no longer want it as a bathing spot. Collect a few renovating ideas to get the creative juices flowing and to clarify your options.
  1. End Table

    • If your bird bath is small enough bring it inside and turn it into an end table. Before you bring it inside, clean it well using a garden hose or power washer to remove any debris from the surface of the bird bath. Measure the circumference of the top. Have a glass top cut at your local hardware store to match the circumference. Put the glass on top to finish the end table. If the glass does not sit securely on top, use rubber feet to keep it from sliding. Adding colored beads in the bowl of the bird bath adds additional flair.

    Planter

    • Bowl-shaped baths are the right shape to create a planter. Fill the inside of the bird bath's bowl with potting soil. Then add small plants or flowers. Alternatively, fill the bowl with pebbles or glass stones. Then insert fake plants or twigs into the stones. Either way, bird bath planters work inside or out. If the planter is smaller, treat it like a flowerpot and place it on the bathroom sink or kitchen windowsill.

    Indoor Storage

    • Smaller bathes also work indoors for storage. Place small bird baths on bathroom counters, bookshelves or desktops. Use the small bowl to hold pens, shaving supplies, makeup brushes or cotton swabs. Add additional decoration to the bath by painting to match your décor.

    Candle Holder

    • Large or small bird baths make simple candle holder. For the larger baths, fill the bowl with stones or sand and place pillar candles into the bowl or fill the bowl with water. Float small floater candles in the water. For smaller baths, place votives or tealights in the small bowls. If the bowls are deep, add sand or stones to raise the candles higher. Place the small baths on counters, tabletops or hang them on the wall.

    Bird Feeder

    • If the bird bath is damaged too much to use it as a bird bath, turn it into a bird feeder. Instead of filling the bath with water, add bird seed. However, if there are holes in the bowl of the bath, repair those first. Repair smaller holes with plumber's caulk or larger holes with cement.
