How Can Kids Make Bird Feeders?

Children tend to be fascinated with nature. An easy way to help them feel more connected to nature is to give them the tools they need to create their own bird feeder. No matter which model she makes, a child can find satisfaction in knowing that she is helping nature thrive.
  1. Pie-Tin Feeder

    • A simple aluminum pie tin makes an effective bird feeder. Help your child punch small holes for drainage in the bottom of the tin, place it on a stool or other flat surface in the yard, and fill it with birdseed. This is an especially popular feeder for cardinals, sparrows, jays and juncos.

    Oriole Bird Feeder

    • A baby food jar with a string tied around the neck is the perfect oriole feeder. Simply fill it with orange juice and hang it from a tree. According to Outdoor Sports Web, even though the jar will hang at a tilt, orioles will perch on the rim and sip the juice.

    Pine Cone Bird Feeder

    • There are two easy ways to make a pine cone bird feeder. The first is to cover a pine cone with peanut butter and roll it in bird seed. The other is to smear it with suet and to leave it plain. Tie a piece of string or yarn near the top of the pine cone, and hang outside. Birds are equally attracted to both recipes.

    Dougnut Hole Bird Feeder

    • You won't actually use doughnuts to make this bird feeder, but you will use doughnut-shaped cereal. Cut a piece of yarn, and tie one end to a pencil. String the loose end though pieces of doughnut-shaped cereal. Once the yarn is around two-thirds full of cereal, remove the pencil and tie the two ends together. Hang outside from a tree or post for birds to snack on.

    Cookie Cutter Bird Feeder

    • All you'll need for this bird feeder project are slices of stale bread, cookie cutters, a straw and yarn. Lay the bread slices on the counter or table, and use cookie cutters to cut the bread into shapes. Use the straw to make a small hole in the middle of each piece of bread, and string the cut-out shapes on the piece of yarn. Tie the two ends of yarn together, and hang outside for the birds to enjoy.
