How to Make a Bird Ffeeder With a Plastic Bottle

Most households produce quite a bit of trash, including plastic bottles. You can reuse a plastic bottle and create an outdoor feature for your yard at the same time. Constructing a bird feeder from a plastic bottle is simple enough for kids to lend a hand as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic bottle, 2-liter size
  • Nail
  • 2 unsharpened pencils
  • Wire or string, 16" to 18"

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse out an empty plastic two-liter bottle and remove its label.

    • 2

Punch a nail through the side of the bottle about an inch higher than the bottle's halfway point. Create another nail hole on the other side of the bottle, directly opposite the first hole.

    • 3

Punch another hole with the nail toward the lower third of the bottle. Position the hole so that it is on a side that does not yet contain a nail hole. Create another hole exactly opposite it.

    • 4

Insert an unsharpened pencil through each of the nail holes. These will be the perches.

    • 5

Poke four more holes with the nails. Each hole should be about 1.5 inches above each perch. Make the holes large enough for a bird to put its head through to get at the seeds; these will be the feeder holes.

    • 6

Punch two holes on either side of the bottle's neck.

    • 7

Thread string or wire through these final two holes. Tie a knot in the ends of the wire or string. This will serve as the hanger.

    • 8

Fill the feeder with seed by removing the cap and pouring bird seed into the bottle. Replace the cap when you are done.

    • 9

Hang the bird feeder from a tree limb or an ornamental hook.
