Pink flamingos have long been a favorite yard accessory for fun, wacky home design. You can make your own pink flamingos by cutting sheets of plywood into a flamingo shape. Paint the flamingos in any color you want. For added wackiness, paint polka dots or stripes on the flamingos, or paint the flamingos wearing sunglasses or swimsuits. To make it a useful addition to the lawn, paint or install house numbers on the flamingos so people can spot your home easily.
Bird feeders are a way to add colorful accessories to your yard, but with the added benefit that they can draw real birds to your property. Handmade bird feeders are not difficult to make. In fact, something as simple as a pine cone covered in peanut butter and bird seed can draw many birds to your lawn. For a wackier twist on a bird feeder like this, try hanging the pine cone with colorful ribbon, or hanging multiple feeders in a tree for a bold statement.
A mailbox does not have to be just a dull receptacle for sending and receiving mail; it can be a dynamic design feature in your yard. For example, paint the mailbox bright pink for a flamingo, or any other color you want to resemble the bird of your choosing. With pieces of wood, mount features onto the mailbox to look like a bird's neck or wings. A colorful mailbox is sure to get your home noticed by others on the block.
You do not have to be a professional welder to make one-of-a-kind bird statues. All you really need to make them is a little creativity, some sturdy wire and a soldering gun. An inexpensive soldering gun will do; these can be found at many craft supply, hardware and electronics stores. Draw the shape of the statue you want to create. Bend and cut your wire until you reach your desired bird shape. Attach pieces of wire by wrapping the pieces with a strip of solder. Use a soldering gun to melt the solder in place and fuse the metal pieces.
A birdbath is another area where you can use bird-themed decor while actually luring real birds to your yard. Choose materials that can withstand the outdoors. For example, stone, tile, metal and plastic are durable enough to handle wind and rain. Create a basin by using a stone bowl, a shallow plastic lid or any other bowl-shaped feature. Mount this on a pedestal so birds can have easy access for a quick drink between flights.
