Get a couple of hay bails. Pull one apart and spread the hay on the ground. Once the hay is spread place the other bail on top of it.
Collect some old clothes. You want pieces of clothing in a few sizes, because you're going to make a mom and pop scarecrow. You'll need some shirts, paints, gloves, boots, socks, bandanas and hats. Make sure that one hat looks like a man's hat and the other a woman's hat---a bonnet is a good choice for this.
Stuff the clothes to create the body. To do this, stuff some garbage bags with newspapers; use large bags for the body and small can liners for the arms and legs. Stuff the bags so that the newspapers inside are fairly compact.
Fill the pants with the stuffed bags until the legs fill out. Tape the ends of the pant legs, put a pair of socks of them and then stuff them into the boots. Sit the stuffed pants on the hay bail.
Add the stuff bag to the shirt and button it up. Stack the top half of the body onto the pants. To make it stand up get a small stick and push it into the hay bail behind the scarecrow. Fasten the body of the scarecrow onto the stick with some heavy tape.
Get a plastic trick-or-treat pumpkin; this is the kind of pumpkin that kids take house to house for their candy. Draw a funny face on the pumpkin; make a man's face.
Tape the pumpkin to the top of the stuffed shirt using thick tape. Turn the face in the right direction.
Cover the neck area and the tape with a bandana.
Place a battery-operated tealight in the pumpkin; you'll turn this on at night.
Cover the head with a hat.
Repeat the process to make the woman scarecrow.
Buy some pumpkins of various sizes---choose both large pumpkins as well as mini-pumpkins.
Spray paint the pumpkins black and let them dry.
Glue on large craft eyes using craft glue and let the glue dry according to the instructions on the can.
Attach some black pipe cleaners to the bottom of the pumpkin with some decorative tacks. You need eight of them to make the legs.
Bend the legs so that they look like the legs of a creepy, crawly spider. Place on and around the hay bail. You can place them near the scarecrow family, at their feet and in the yard if the pumpkin is large enough.
