Instructions

  1. Porch Seating

    • 1

Place two or three hay bales on the porch; these bales will become extra seating for your outdoor fall party. If your porch has a rail, then positioning the hay bales parallel to the front door with the outward edges slightly turned out is a good option. The hay bales can be seen, but you still have access to the door.

    • 2

Locate a thick material suc has denim or burlap and throw it over the top of the bales. Make sure that it's long enough to cover the length of the bales with a bit of overlap on all sides. Additionally, it should be thick enough so that the individual pieces of straw don't poke through; since people will be sitting on the hay bales, it could hurt to get poked by the stray pieces of straw if they stick through the material. Because the hay bales are such a light color, you want to find material that's colorful to make your hay bales more decorative.

    • 3

Turn over apple bushel baskets, and position them at the ends of the hay bales. Cover them with several colorful bandanas. These function as mini tables on which you can place a metal camp tray, a thermos of coffee and some metal camp coffee cups.

    • 4

Keep the bugs away by placing some citronella candle buckets on the porch steps. These come in a variety of sizes.

    Hay, Pumpkins and Cornstalks

    • 5

Break apart a hay bale, and spread the hay on the ground where you want to make your fall yard display. Use a garden rake to spread the hay around to avoid pricking your finger.

    • 6

Position two bound hay bales on the hay you've spread out. Leave a little room in between them and position them in a "V" shape with the open part facing outward.

    • 7

Add some dried cornstalks with a very large bandana. Use at least three stalks so that you can spread the bottoms of the stalks out like a teepee. The best place to place the cornstalks is behind the hay bales.

    • 8
An apple basket adds a decorative element to your fall yard decorations.

Fill a large wooden bushel basket full of apples. If you're concerned about losing apples to the weather, fill the bottom part of the basket with garbage bags stuffed with newspapers until the bundle is packed tight. Add a layer or two of apples on top so that you can see the apples over the top of the basket. Place the basket on top of one of the hay bales. Allow a few stray apples to fall to the side of the basket.

    • 9

Carve pumpkins of various sizes, and place them on the other bale. You can elevate a few pumpkins by turning a bushel basket over and sitting the pumpkins on top.

    • 10

Add clusters of other fall fruits such as gourds and squash as well as more pumpkins to the ground in front of the bales.
