How to Make a Hummingbird Feeder Without a Hot Glue Gun

Making your own hummingbird feeder and filling it with sugarwater can help attract these beautiful beings to your own yard. This project is easy enough for a child to create with adult supervision and it can be made with items you already have around the house. This project is also a good way to upcycle or repurpose items otherwise destined for the trash.

  • Pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the empty glass bottle in a sink of warm water until the label loosens, if the bottle has a paper label. Peel off the label and rub off the remaining glue. If the label is plastic, snip the plastic with scissors and pull it off. Wash and rinse the bottle in the sink. Place the bottle upside down in a safe place until it dries completely.

    • 2

Pull the wire coat hanger apart by twisting it in the opposite direction of the twist near the hook. If the hanger is too thick, twist it using pliers or select a softer metal coat hanger.

    • 3

Bend and wrap the coat hanger around the bottle so it creates a holder for it. Angle the bottle downward and wrap some of the wire around the neck so the bottle is held snugly in place. Leave a little wire at the mouth end to make a perch for the hummingbirds. Bend the perch in a way that a hummingbird can rest at the mouth of the bottle. Make a loop with the wire near the bottom of the bottle (which will be the highest part of the feeder) to hang the feeder from a tree or plant hanger later.

    • 4

Place the cap on the bottle. Drill a hole in the center of the cap while holding the bottle firmly with your other hand. Remove the cap.

    • 5

Scoop 1/2 cup of sugar into a 16-ounce bottle or jar. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and stir it gently with a spoon or stir stick until the sugar dissolves.

    • 6

Pour the sugar water mixture into the hummingbird feeder. Replace the cap on the hummingbird feeder. Hang the feeder from a tree using twine, or hang the wire loop on a plant hook. Bend the wire if necessary to get the feeder to hang at a 45-degree angle or whatever works best for your bottle and wire configuration.
