Instructions

    • 1

Decide where to place your chessboard. Pick an area with enough room for 64 squares, of whatever size you want.

    • 2

Measure the area. This will help you determine the size of the squares.

    • 3

Roughly outline the space for your squares with chalk or another washable substance. A chessboard is eight columns wide and eight columns long. Use a ruler or long straight edge to get your squares even. To make sure they are as even as possible, measure your larger square lengthwise and divide the number by eight. For example, if your square measures 64 inches on each side, your smaller squares would measure eight inches. Repeat the process for the width of the chessboard.

Purchase 64 tiles, 32 in each of two contrasting colors, and assemble them as your chessboard. For a cheaper option, buy 32 tiles. Place them in an alternating pattern, instantly creating squares out of the places where you did not place tiles.
