Different Ways to Hang Wind Chimes

Wind chimes ring with beautiful notes as they dance on the wind. However, if you can't hang your wind chimes or you choose a hanging method that doesn't work in the local weather conditions, your wind chimes won't last very long. Consider how long you'll be in the home as well as the weather you'll experience when determining which method to use to hang your wind chimes.
  1. S Hooks

    • Loop the bottom portion of an S hook through the top of the wind chime and slip the top hook of the S hook over the rim of your gutter. This is a simple and quick way to hang your wind chimes and it's not permanent so you can take your wind chimes down when you need to. This is a great way to hang wind chimes in rental units or in areas where it's often too windy to leave the chimes out. Simply lift the S hook off of the gutters to bring the wind chime indoors.

    Shepherds Hooks

    • Stick a shepherds hook deep into the ground and slip your wind chimes on the hook. This method of hanging your wind chimes requires no hardware or tools and doesn't attach anything to the house at all. Use shepherds hooks to hang wind chimes at rental cabins, tents or motor homes. When you're ready to move on, simply pull up the shepherds hook and drive away.

    Plant Hangers

    • Plant hangers are among the more common methods used to hang wind chimes. Whether you use plant hangers that screw into the ceiling or you choose brackets that extend from the walls, plant hangers are widely available at home improvement stores, hardware stores and garden centers.

    Staples

    • Permanently attach your wind chimes by using a staple gun and stapling the hook on the top of the wind chime directly to your porch ceiling. This is a great solution for areas of high wind where wind chimes blow off traditional hooks and shepherds hooks. Use this method with small wind chimes that make subtle sounds and only with the consent of the home owner.
