How to Make a Torchlight

In order to create a warm and romantic atmosphere in your backyard, you may want to employ a few torches to provide pleasant light in the evenings. Instead of buying commercially available torches from a home supply store, you can make your own at home. This can save you some money, and allow you to reuse materials you may have otherwise thrown into the garbage. Do not place any source of fire near or under anything flammable, and do not leave fire unattended.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the top off of the tuna and soup cans.

    • 2

Poke a hole with the hammer and nail about the same diameter of your rope in the middle of the remaining flat side of the tuna can.

    • 3

Cut a length of rope about 6 in. long and feed it through the hole in the tuna can, leaving about 1in. exposed from the closed side of the can.

    • 4

Attach one end of the pole to the soup can, open end upwards, using some duct tape.

    • 5

Push the other end of the pole into the ground so that the soup can is upright at about shoulder level.

    • 6

Fill the soup can with lamp oil so that it is about half full.

    • 7

Place the open end of the tuna can over the soup can covering the oil, with the 1in. cotton rope exposed above as a wick. Make sure the bottom portion of the rope is soaking in the lamp oil.

    • 8

Light the wick when you are ready to use.
