How to Adjust a Toro Powershift Belt

A Toro Powershift's drive belt helps control the operation of the lawnmower's cutting blades. These belts can loosen over time and must be readjusted to ensure proper operation. Professional adjustment can prove costly, but you can adjust your Toro Powershift mower's belt even if you are unfamiliar with the parts on your mower's deck.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the blades are not engaged on your Toro Powershift mower. Stop the mower and set the parking brake.

    • 2

Raise the mower deck via the deck lever beside the driver's seat.

    • 3

Look under your mower at the center of the mower deck. The Toro Powershift's drive belt is connected to a pulley on the deck. Check the belt's tension by locating the spring-loaded idler, which is a wheel-shaped piece just below the spring. There is a center bolt on the spring loaded idler. Ensure the center bolt is positioned directly under the top alignment hole in the idler's left support plate. A misaligned center bolt indicates a maladjusted belt.

    • 4

Loosen the bolt at the top of the spring loaded idler using a socket wrench. Slide a breaker bar or ratchet into the square hole on the Toro mower's idle plate.

    • 5

Rotate the mower idler plate clockwise with the ratchet or breaker bar in order to increase belt tension. Move the instrument counterclockwise to loosen the belt back up. Be sure to increase the tension with the ratchet or breaker bar until you can feel resistance. Do not attempt to tighten it beyond this point.

Tighten the bolt on the idler plate once more using your socket wrench.
