How to Remove a C Clip From a Briggs & Stratton Starter

The C-clip on top of the Briggs and Stratton starter holds the gasket to the top of the starter. The open ring of the ring clip slides over the top pin on the starter and snaps snuggly in place. Whereas other types of clips could eventually vibrate off the starter, the C-clip fits so tight that it is virtually impossible for it to slip off. A specialized tool called snap-ring pliers are often used to remove C-clips, but if you don’t have access to this tool, a small, slotted screwdriver will work.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the head of the slotted screwdriver into the opening between the C-clip and the shaft on top of the Briggs and Stratton starter.

    • 2

Twist the head of the screwdriver slightly to wedge the screwdriver between the shaft and the C-clip.

    • 3

Pry the C-clip off the shaft slowly so you don’t damage the clip. Grab the side of the C-clip with needle-nose pliers if necessary to pull the C-clip from the starter.
