How to Replace a Kohler MV20S Governor

The governor on your Kohler MV20S engine is used to control the top speed of your tractor lawn mower. If the governor fails, the engine can run at unrestricted speeds, which could pose a safety hazard. You can replace your Kohler MV20S governor even if you have no experience working on Kohler engines or knowledge of how to troubleshoot lawn machine parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your lawn tractor and wait several minutes for the Kohler MV20S engine to cool.

    • 2

Open the hood over the engine and look for the flywheel. The flywheel is the large, circular part at the top of the engine block. It has a circular iron cover that is held in place by bolts. Remove each of the bolts using a socket wrench, then pull the cover off and set it aside.

    • 3

Find the plastic flap underneath the iron flywheel shroud. This is the governor's flap and it is near the side of the exposed flywheel and sits atop a rounded, black part known as the magneto. There is a bolt that holds this piece of the governor down against the magneto. Remove it using a socket wrench.

    • 4

Locate the carburetor along the left side of the Kohler MV20S engine. The carburetor will be distinctive because of its bowl shape. There is an eyelet on the end of the carburetor that a rod attaches to. This rod is the governor rod. Pull the rod out of the eyelet using your hands.

    • 5

Return to the side of the flywheel where you removed the governor's bolt. The square governor part can now be pulled up and out.

    • 6

Put the new governor into the spot vacated by the old, and follow your disconnection procedures in reverse to attach its flap and rod to the Kohler MV20S engine appropriately.

    • 7

Fit the iron shroud back over the tractor's flywheel and reinsert the bolts using your socket wrench.
