How to Shift a Six-Speed Riding Lawnmower

Having a riding lawnmower with six speeds is an advantage because you can choose the right speed for the job at hand. Whether you're trimming, bagging grass or just mowing, the rate of movement you need is there. Before you can operate a six-speed riding lawnmower, you must know to shift the transmission. It's not difficult to do.

      Locate the combination clutch/brake pedal on the six-speed riding lawnmower. It will be on the operator's left side, right above the foot rest.

      Push the clutch/brake pedal completely down until the lawnmower comes to a complete stop. Hold the pedal down.

      Locate the throttle control. It may be located on the dashboard or on the rear fender of the body of the lawn mower. It's a sliding lever that's marked "THROTTLE." It has "CHOKE", "FAST" and "SLOW" settings.

      Slow the engine power of the lawn mower down by sliding the throttle lever to the "SLOW" position.

      Locate the shifter on the mower. It will be below the dashboard, or on the rear fender. Move the shifter to a lower gear, to a higher gear, or to the "REVERSE" position.

      Slowly release the clutch/brake pedal on the six-speed riding lawnmower. Move the throttle control to the desired speed. When the pedal is almost raised back up, the lawnmower will begin to move.
