Check the oil level of your Cub Cadet mower to ensure it is not too high. Remove the oil cap from the oil reservoir and slide the dipstick in to measure. Pull the dipstick out and check that the oil mark does not reach beyond the "High" hash mark on the dipstick.
Set the dipstick and cap back into place on the oil reservoir.
Place a pan under the oil drain plug near the bottom of the rear wheels on your Cub Cadet. Pull the plug out to drain the excess oil. This will prevent further oil from entering the air filter and causing exhaust leaks.
Check the air filter on your Cub Cadet mower if the exhaust is still leaking. The previous high level of oil within the oil reservoir likely seeped into the air filter, which produced the exhaust leak. The air filter is on the end of the carburetor, which can be found halfway up the left side of the Cub Cadet's Briggs & Stratton engine. Take out the air filter, if it is dirty and oily, by removing the screws that hold it in place with a Phillips head screwdriver.
Wipe the end of the filter with a soft, damp cloth to clean it off.
Mount the air filter back onto the end of the carburetor and secure it by tightening its screws with the screwdriver.
